IPL Photofacial uses broad-spectrum light to target melanin and hemoglobin in your skin — effectively reducing sun spots, redness, broken capillaries, and uneven tone without disturbing surrounding tissue. IPL Photofacial FAQs: Pigmentation & Sun Damage Questions

Everything you need to know before your first appointment — or your next one.

What is an IPL Photofacial and what does it treat?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive light-based treatment that targets pigmentation, sun damage, redness, broken capillaries, and fine lines, improving overall skin tone and texture without breaking the skin’s surface. At Alani Skin MD, IPL is delivered using the Motus AZ. Alpha or BBL (BroadBand Light) machines, some of the most advanced light platforms available.
IPL uses broad-spectrum light energy to target color-based concerns — pigmentation, redness, and vascular irregularities — without resurfacing the skin. CO2 and CoolPeel lasers use focused laser energy to physically resurface and remodel the skin’s surface and deeper layers. IPL is the better fit for patients whose primary concern is tone and discoloration rather than texture and wrinkles, and it involves significantly less downtime than ablative laser treatments.
Yes, it’s a sign the treatment is working. After IPL, pigmented spots (sun spots, age spots, freckles) will temporarily darken and rise to the surface of the skin over the first few days before naturally flaking off over the following 1–2 weeks. This “coffee ground” effect is the melanin being drawn up and expelled by the body’s natural healing process. Most patients are fully cleared and seeing their results within 1–2 weeks post-treatment. Avoid picking or exfoliating the treated areas during this window to allow the process to complete naturally.
Most patients see meaningful improvement in 1–3 initial treatments. After completing the initial series, an optional annual maintenance treatment helps keep sun damage and pigmentation from accumulating — particularly important for patients in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area who spend significant time outdoors. Your Alani provider will recommend the right number of sessions based on your skin concerns and goals.
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks before your appointment — tanned skin significantly increases the risk of adverse reactions. Discontinue blood thinners and retinoids one week prior as directed. After treatment, use a mild cleanser, avoid harsh skincare products for at least a week, and apply broad-spectrum SPF consistently for at least 6 weeks.
