Kybella Double Chin FAQs

Everything you need to know before your first appointment — or your next one.

What is Kybella and how does it work?
Kybella is an FDA-approved nonsurgical injectable that permanently destroys fat cells beneath the chin, commonly known as a “double chin.” The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. Once those fat cells are destroyed, they cannot return.
Once removed, fat cells are gone for good — meaning results are permanent when patients maintain a stable weight. Unlike treatments that temporarily reduce the appearance of fat, Kybella permanently eliminates the cells themselves so they can no longer store or accumulate fat in the treated area.
Both treat submental (under-chin) fat, but they work differently. Kybella uses an injectable acid to destroy fat cells, while CoolSculpting freezes them. Kybella is often preferred for the chin area due to its precision. Your Alani provider can help determine which approach is best suited for your anatomy and goals during your consultation.
Most patients require 2–4 sessions total, using 2–4 vials per session, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the amount of submental fat and your desired outcome. Results are permanent once the fat cells are eliminated.
