CO2 Laser Resurfacing FAQs

Everything you need to know before your first appointment — or your next one.

What is CO2 laser treatment and what does it do?
CO2 laser is one of the most powerful skin resurfacing treatments available — using fractional carbon dioxide laser energy to remove damaged outer layers of skin while simultaneously delivering deep dermal remodeling to stimulate collagen production. At Alani Skin MD, it treats sun damage, deeper wrinkles, skin texture irregularities, and skin laxity on the face, neck, and décolleté. It’s the gold standard for patients seeking significant, long-lasting skin improvement in a single treatment.
CO2 laser goes deeper and produces more dramatic results than either, but also requires more downtime. Chemical peels exfoliate chemically, RF Microneedling combines heat and needles for collagen stimulation, and CO2 laser ablates and resurfaces the skin at a deeper level for more significant correction of sun damage, wrinkles, and texture. It’s best suited for patients with more advanced skin concerns who are willing to commit to a recovery period for greater results.
Plan for approximately 10 days of recovery. During this time skin will be red, swollen, and actively healing — most patients work from home or take time off during the initial recovery window. After the first week, redness gradually fades over the following weeks. Sun exposure must be avoided and broad-spectrum SPF applied consistently for at least 6 weeks post-treatment.
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. Discontinue blood thinners and retinoids one week prior as advised by your Alani provider. Coming in with well-protected, unexposed skin gives the laser the cleanest, most even surface to work with and reduces the risk of post-treatment complications like hyperpigmentation.
Results from a full-face treatment can last years with proper sun protection and a good skincare routine. Patients dealing with persistent sun damage, deep wrinkles, or significant texture concerns that haven’t responded to lighter treatments often find CO2 laser to be the most impactful single investment they make in their skin.
