The Laser Ladder: From a Little Glow to a Full Skin Reset
Your skin goals might be simple. The laser menu? A little less so. With so many options, knowing what to book can feel like learning a new language. Each treatment has a different job, and the right choice depends on what you want to improve and how much recovery time fits your life.
Meet the Laser Ladder: your guide to Alani Skin MD’s laser and light treatments, from gentle brightening to deeper resurfacing. Whether you are laser-curious or ready to address years of Arizona sun damage, there is a place to start.
What Is the Laser Ladder?
The Laser Ladder groups treatments by their general intensity, from light treatments that target discoloration to resurfacing lasers that remove damaged skin and address deeper concerns.
The general progression: light-based brightening → gentle laser renewal → moderate resurfacing → deeper fractional correction → intensive resurfacing.
Think of these as overlapping levels. Settings, treatment depth, and the amount of skin treated all affect intensity and recovery. You don’t need to work through every level, and the strongest treatment isn’t automatically the best fit.
Level 1: Brighten Things Up
IPL / Photofacial: For Spots and Redness
If uneven color is your main concern, IPL Photofacial may be a starting point. It uses light to target pigmentation and redness without resurfacing the skin.
The quick benefit: A more even complexion, with improvement in sun spots, redness, and visible capillaries.
Recovery is generally lighter than with resurfacing lasers, although treated spots can temporarily darken before flaking away. Think clearer-looking skin with a smaller interruption to your routine.
BBL & BBL HERO: For a More Even Glow
BBL, or BroadBand Light, also targets pigmentation, redness, and sun damage. BBL HERO offers faster treatment and efficient coverage of larger areas.
The quick benefit: Brighter, more even-looking skin with minimal downtime.
HERO’s speed doesn’t automatically put it higher on the intensity ladder. Your provider chooses the settings and approach for your skin.
Level 2: Your First Laser Refresh
Moxi: For Early Sun Damage and Maintenance
New to lasers? Moxi is a gentle, non-ablative fractional option, meaning it treats skin without removing its outer layer. It’s designed for early sun damage, uneven tone, and ongoing skin maintenance.
The quick benefit: A fresher, more even complexion with a relatively light recovery.
Expect some temporary redness and a rough, sandpaper-like feel as skin renews. It is a good conversation starter when you want visible improvement and have limited downtime.
NanoLaser Peel: For a Surface Refresh
The NanoLaser Peel removes a very shallow outer layer of skin to improve dullness and mild texture.
The quick benefit: Smoother, brighter-looking skin.
Expect approximately one to three days of mild pinkness as your skin heals. Like Moxi, NanoLaser Peel sits at the gentler end of the laser ladder, refreshing your complexion by resurfacing the skin’s outermost layer.
Level 3: A More Noticeable Reset
ArcticLaser Peel: For Texture With Added Comfort
The ArcticLaser Peel uses cooling during resurfacing to help make treatment more comfortable.
The quick benefit: Improvement in texture, pigmentation, and fine lines with a focus on comfort.
Think of it as a step up from a gentle NanoLaser refresh, with less intensity than deeper peel options. Your provider will tailor the settings to your skin and explain what to expect during recovery.
MicroLaser Peel: For Fine Lines and Roughness
The MicroLaser Peel treats a deeper surface layer than NanoLaser.
The quick benefit: Smoother texture and improvement in fine lines and surface pigmentation.
Plan for approximately three to five days of healing. MicroLaser is a great option when you are ready to give your skin a little extra recovery time for a smoother, more refreshed look.
CoolPeel: For CO2 Resurfacing With Less Downtime
CoolPeel uses CO2 laser technology at a lower intensity than a full CO2 treatment.
The quick benefit: Improvement in sun damage, fine lines, and rough texture with a shorter recovery commitment.
CoolPeel is typically performed as a series of three sessions. Expect some temporary redness and sensitivity, and give your skin time to recover with the recommended aftercare between treatments.
Halo: For Tone and Texture Together
Halo combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in a hybrid fractional treatment.
The quick benefit: Improvement in uneven pigmentation and texture in one treatment approach.
If uneven tone and texture are both on your wish list, Halo can help address them together. Your provider will customize the intensity to your skin goals and the recovery time that works for you.
Level 4: Focused Correction
ProFractional: For Scars and More Pronounced Texture
ProFractional treats small channels within the skin while leaving surrounding areas untreated.
The quick benefit: Improvement in texture, wrinkles, and the appearance of scars.
Treatment depth and coverage can be adjusted to your concerns. More intensive settings can mean more recovery, so your provider will explain what your specific treatment involves.
Level 5: The Bigger Skin Reset
CO2 Laser: For Significant Sun Damage and Wrinkles
CO2 laser resurfacing removes damaged skin and stimulates remodeling for more substantial correction.
The quick benefit: Improvement in deeper wrinkles, pronounced texture, and significant sun damage.
This level needs room on your calendar. Plan for approximately 10 days of initial recovery, with some redness potentially lasting beyond that as your skin continues to heal.
Contour TRL: For Advanced Resurfacing
Contour TRL stands for Tunable Resurfacing Laser. Its depth can be adjusted, and Alani positions it at the most intensive end of its resurfacing menu.
The quick benefit: Comprehensive resurfacing for deeper wrinkles and substantial sun and texture damage.
Plan for approximately seven to 14 days of healing, depending on your treatment depth. Contour TRL and CO2 sit at the more intensive end of the laser ladder, with settings tailored to your skin goals and recovery needs.
What About Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal targets hair follicles to reduce unwanted growth. It doesn’t belong on a facial resurfacing scale because it treats hair rather than wrinkles or texture.
The quick benefit: Long-term hair reduction and less daily shaving.
We use Motus AX and Sciton mJOULE technology to reduce unwanted hair growth. Your provider will tailor your treatment and session schedule to your skin, hair, and the area being treated.
Is RF Microneedling a Laser?
Not exactly. RF microneedling combines needles with radiofrequency energy. Alani offers Potenza, Sylfirm, and Scarlet.
The quick benefit: Collagen stimulation to improve firmness, texture, and the appearance of acne scars.
If firmer skin and smoother texture are your goals, RF microneedling could be a great fit for your treatment plan.
Does a Stronger Laser Mean Better Results?
The best treatment is the one that matches your concern, skin, and goals. A deeper resurfacing treatment may make sense for pronounced wrinkles, while light-based treatment may be more appropriate for redness. Intensity alone doesn’t determine the right choice.
