Dark Spots, Meet Your Match: IPL Photofacial Explained

Summer memories look good on you. The lingering sun spots? Those can go.

If your complexion looks uneven, flushed, or a little less radiant lately, an IPL photofacial could be your next skin refresh. This light-based treatment targets discoloration with a lighter recovery commitment than deeper resurfacing.

What is an IPL Photofacial?

An IPL photofacial uses intense pulsed light to reduce the appearance of sun spots, redness, and visible capillaries. Treatment areas include the face, neck, and décolleté.

Often called an “IPL laser facial,” IPL technically uses broad-spectrum light rather than a laser. It targets unwanted color without removing the outer layer of skin.

The quick benefit: A brighter, more even-looking complexion with minimal downtime.

What Does IPL Help With?

Think of IPL as a treatment for the color concerns that interrupt your glow:

  • Sun spots: Brown spots left behind by sun exposure.
  • Redness: Visible flushing or uneven red tones.
  • Broken capillaries: Small visible blood vessels.
  • Uneven pigmentation: Areas of discoloration that make skin look less uniform.

IPL sits toward the lighter end of the treatment spectrum. Its focus is tone correction, with less recovery than ablative resurfacing.

What to Expect After an IPL Photofacial

Recovery is typically manageable. Temporary pinkness, mild swelling, or a warm sensation can occur. Give your skin a little breathing room while it settles.

Treated brown spots may look darker before naturally flaking away over the next one to two weeks. Your glow needs a little patience – resist the urge to pick or exfoliate them.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least four weeks before IPL. Arrive with your skincare routine and medication list ready to review.

Your provider will explain which products to pause. Any changes to prescription medications should be cleared with the prescribing clinician.

After treatment, keep skincare gentle. Use your recommended moisturizer, avoid harsh products, and follow your sun-protection instructions. Explore the full IPL preparation and aftercare guidance before your visit.

Is IPL Right for Your Skin?

A treatment can sound perfect on paper. Your skin deserves a closer look.
